In the Spirit of Miami Beach, written by David Leddick in 2006, (Assouline Publishing) is a quirky little book filled with interesting historical photos and personal reflections of its author, who first came to the area in 1979. He was captivated by Miami Beach and as an advertising creative director, he saw beyond the shabby buildings and cityscapes to the glory of the art deco neighborhood.
“Miami Beach is a kind of a dream. Imagined as a dream. Built as a dream. And today this dream has been reawakened and has become in ever-larger dream,” Leddick writes. He includes historical facts on the creation of Miami Beach out of swamp land, but more interestingly he recounts his personal experiences buying and renovating property here and relationship with preservation gurus Barbara Capitman and decorator Leonard Horowitz.
This book does indeed capture the spirit of Miami Beach, a place like no other in the world.
