French Flock to South Beach Moroccan Restaurant

South Beach is home to a superb new Moroccan restaurant, Ta-zin, where French expatriates have found a home.

Featuring authentic Moroccan cuisine — including pastillas, cous-cous and tagines — this exotic new entry in the Miami Beach restaurant scene also heats up weekend nightlife with belly dancers and a very relaxed crowd.

On a recent Wednesday night the restaurant had many tables of French speaking guests, who lingered talking and enjoying the ambiance long after the tables were cleared. The cuisine is just as good as the better Moroccan places in Paris and is served by well-trained staff that seem to anticipate customer needs without being overly intrusive. It is a pleasant change from many South Florida restaurants, where the staff thinks it perfectly acceptable to interrupt their customers in mid-conversation.

Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food, professional demeanor of the staff and lovely “nights of Arabia” décor.

BISCAYNE BOULEVARD, You wouldn’t know it ….

Each time we travel from Miami Beach north on Biscayne Boulevard we are astonished at the changes from the week before. Chic boutiques and hip restaurants are replacing sleazy motels and down-at-the-heel retailers at a rapid clip. The major road work is now concluded and the city has invested in lush plantings along the median strip where it exists and the sidewalk space where it does not. The renowned boulevard looks beautiful and offers interesting shopping experiences including clothing boutiques, day spas, antique and collectible shops. Fine dining and interesting bistros can be found all along the mid-town and Upper Eastside corridor, starting at the uber-hip Design District’s Fratelli Lyon to Michy’s, one of the city’s top dining venues, at 6927 Biscayne Boulevard.

Miami’s First Deluxe Yachting Resort: “The Residences”

A fabulous new yachting resort, “The Residences” at Island Gardens Miami by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, will break ground late 2009 on Miami’s Watson Island. Watson Island is ideally situated between Miami and Miami Beach and boasts some of the loveliest water views in the region .
The stunning mixed-use development will include private residences in the Shangri-La Hotel, available through either full or fractional ownership. The ownership plans include use of the development’s yachts, anchored at what will be Miami’s only mega-yacht marina.
The development will include high-end international retail shops, a selection of waterfront restaurants from cafes to celebrity chef venues, and a super luxurious spa in the hotel. Developers say that of the 100 private residences, about 17 have already been spoken for. Prices range from $215,000 for a one-eighth share of a small unit to $10,000,000 for a penthouse unit, which are only sold as full ownership units.
A one-eight ownership will purchase 45 days of use, plus two days of yacht use. Rentals are permissible. The project is expected to finish construction at the end of 2011.

Security in South Beach

Tagged Under : , , ,

European friends recently visiting here after a five-year hiatus were impressed with how clean and safe our streets are now. “South Beach has totally changed since we were last here,” they said. “The streets are impeccably maintained; the streets are peaceful and feel safe even late at night. There is a police presence to keep things that way.”

We can only concur. There is a strong neighborhood feeling in South Beach among residents. We walk the streets from dawn to late at night and have always felt comfortable.

Tamarind Thai A Fabulous Find on Normandy Isle.

Our first venture outside the culinary offerings of South Beach restaurants was a lunch at Tamarind Thai, a moderately-priced but authentic and delicious Thai restaurant off 71st Street in North Miami Beach.  Our friends who lived and worked in Thailand confirmed our initial reaction to the food; it is uniformly tasty and conforms to dishes served in the homeland.    We are partial to a green curry dish with roasted duck; it has pieces of red pepper and pineapple to offset the richness of the crispy duck pieces.  Very special and a dish not often found in US Thai restaurants.  Jean-Marie enjoys a noodle soup with roasted pork and Jane is addicted to a green curry dish with shrimp and eggplant.  Lunch specials include soup and an egg roll and cost under $10, with entrees running between $12 and $20 at dinner.  Just one more reason to love this section of Miami Beach!   Visit us at www.miami-top.com

French Food & Charm in Miami Design District: CHARCUTERIE

Our yardstick for predicting quality in a restaurant starts with the bread.  If the bread and butter are sub par, so goes the rest of the meal.  Charcuterie, located in Miami’s Design District, succeeds with the crusty, airy baguette slices and delicious unsalted butter.  Our first meal at this unpretentious, reasonably- priced French import did not disappoint.  Jean-Marie’s appetizer succeeded admirably — a mushroom soup that was as tasty as American mushrooms allow.  His soup was followed by a flaky-crusted and creamy-centered quiche Lorraine, bearing no relation to the yellow sponges which one often encounters.  Jane ordered a perfectly cooked black grouper, sauced with delicate lemon butter, caper sauce, served with al dente steamed potatoes, green beans and carrots. Desserts and espresso were also hits — crème brûlée, neither too sweet nor bland, creamy rather than too eggy — and a nice peach tart.  All for under $60 — vive La France in Miami.
