Cell Phone Tyranny

I have a hunch, unsubstantiated except through my own experience and intuition, that the advent of the cell phone into our daily lives adds immeasurable stress, wear and tear on our bodies and souls.

We’ve become accustomed to being “available” by cell phone 24/7 to our employers, friends, family and assorted “others.” Long gone is the time when we had landlines screening calls via a phone answering machine, allowing us to postpone communicating when we felt like it, neglecting to call back when that suited our proposes, delaying difficult return calls.

When cell phones first became popular it was cool to be seen popping out a phone at a ballgame or in the office lobby or sitting in an airport. At first a simple novelty, we then became used to being connected at all times. If the mobile phone was misplaced or forgotten at home, a veritable sense of panic would set in. Meals at home, which once were tranquil oasis of time when the landline phone calls were picked up by the machine became places where everyone has a cell phone “at the ready” sitting on the table.

The restaurant experience is less enjoyable now for the ringing of other people’s cell phones. Ill-mannered customers who just have to answer the call yell into the crowd to be heard. It is far from an unusual scene to see two people dining together, each speaking on their respective cell phones. Hello? Why don’t they just save time and money and talk to each other from their desks.

Social discourse has changed as well with the advent of the mobile phone. In the old days the first line of conversation used to be “how are you?” Now, it is the demand to know “Where are you?” We carry on conversations while cooking, working at the computer, putting on make-up, sitting in the tub or toilet. There is no place too private or sacred to be considered a phone-free zone.

In the past I knew that pretty much after 5 p.m. my time would be my own. Last night I received a business call at 8 p.m., a not- that- unusual occurrence. We invited a good friend on our sailboat recently, and he answered numerous business calls from the middle of Biscayne Bay on what was supposed to be a relaxing sail.

What does all this phone togetherness engender? Speaking for myself, and perhaps others, it diminishes the time I can completely unwind. Even in a warm bubble bath, for some reason I feel compelled to rush to attend to my ringing cell. The jolt we used to get when the phone rang in the middle of the night now comes more frequently as people are expanding the hours when they feel it acceptable to call. For some inexplicable reason, people have forgotten basic etiquette when telephoning as though a mobile phone gives the caller new liberties about when to call.

I’ve reached the point of “push back” against my omnipresent phone. No longer do I discuss business after 6 p.m. No longer do I feel the need to make a mad dash to retrieve my phone from my always messy purse before the caller hangs up. If the caller does not bother to leave a message, I do not bother to return the call. We are even thinking of having a cell phone free sailboat. If our guests can not unhook from their phones or blackberries for a six or seven hour sail, we will urge them to please stay home. It just feels right.

Dinner Key Marina

It seems the homey, historic atmosphere of Dinner Key Marina is a little more accessible these days for boaters looking for reasonably-priced slips. The economic condition experienced by everyone has shortened the waiting list at this popular Coconut Grove marina, once home to the storied Pan-American Clippers, the flying boats. The marina is Florida’s largest, with 582 slips, for transient, seasonal, long-term and live-aboard customers. Unlike the increasingly glitzy Miami Beach Marina, which seems to be attracting more and more mega-yachts, Dinner Key is largely populated by power- boaters and sailors who actually like to work and live on their boats.

French Flock to South Beach Moroccan Restaurant

South Beach is home to a superb new Moroccan restaurant, Ta-zin, where French expatriates have found a home.

Featuring authentic Moroccan cuisine — including pastillas, cous-cous and tagines — this exotic new entry in the Miami Beach restaurant scene also heats up weekend nightlife with belly dancers and a very relaxed crowd.

On a recent Wednesday night the restaurant had many tables of French speaking guests, who lingered talking and enjoying the ambiance long after the tables were cleared. The cuisine is just as good as the better Moroccan places in Paris and is served by well-trained staff that seem to anticipate customer needs without being overly intrusive. It is a pleasant change from many South Florida restaurants, where the staff thinks it perfectly acceptable to interrupt their customers in mid-conversation.

Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food, professional demeanor of the staff and lovely “nights of Arabia” décor.

BISCAYNE BOULEVARD, You wouldn’t know it ….

Each time we travel from Miami Beach north on Biscayne Boulevard we are astonished at the changes from the week before. Chic boutiques and hip restaurants are replacing sleazy motels and down-at-the-heel retailers at a rapid clip. The major road work is now concluded and the city has invested in lush plantings along the median strip where it exists and the sidewalk space where it does not. The renowned boulevard looks beautiful and offers interesting shopping experiences including clothing boutiques, day spas, antique and collectible shops. Fine dining and interesting bistros can be found all along the mid-town and Upper Eastside corridor, starting at the uber-hip Design District’s Fratelli Lyon to Michy’s, one of the city’s top dining venues, at 6927 Biscayne Boulevard.

Miami International film festival releases its selections

The 26th Miami International Film Festival has just released its selections for the 2009 season, March 6-15.  Under the leadership of the festival’s new director, Tiziana Finzi, who has curated film festivals in Switzerland and Italy,  the roster includes 97 feature- length films and 40 shorts from 40 countries.  Details of the films and schedule may be obtained through the  Miami International Film Festival website.

We have found the films to be high quality and of interest for those seeking cinema beyond standard Hollywood fare.  For new comers to the festival, we recommend trying to see a film at the splendid Guzman Theatre in downtown Miami, which evokes the 20s architecture and ethos of old Miami.   Hearing the old pipe organ played in a preclude to a film presentation is special indeed.

New World Symphony fabulous performances as new home steel rises

Classical music lovers need not wait for the stunning new Frank Gehry building to be finished to enjoy superb concerts at the New World Symphony on Lincoln Road Mall. Recently we attended a wonderful all Mendelssohn matinee which featured world-class piano and violin soloists, backed up by the talented young musicians honing their skills in post-graduate fellowships. All for the amazing price of a $12 general admission ticket in the existing concert hall, which has good acoustics if somewhat uncomfortable seating.

It was thrilling to see such talent, passion and dedication in young musicians who come from around the world to study under renowned conductor and music director Michael Tilson Thomas. We highly recommend a visit for all who vacation here and those of us who live in Miami Beach and walk by the NWS without taking time to actually buy a ticket.

Mind, Body and Organic Martinis in Miami Beach

Isn’t it obnoxiously self-regarding to focus on “Your Transformation” — a phrase Canyon Ranch has somehow trademarked — when America has undergone a transformation into a place where vain fripperies and vulgar extravagances are met with a gimlet eye?

Read more about it in the January 18th edition of the New-York Times.
